Disney is laying off roughly 80 people connected to their YouTube outlet Maker Studios, according to this Wall Street Journal report. The unit has been struggling financially, and some of its biggest stars have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons.

The studio has reportedly never been profitable, and most likely never earned out the majority of its deal incentives. Also, it's been giving Disney all sorts of headaches along the way.

My guess Disney will close Makers Studios down within a year. That place is cancer right now. You can't have a founder caught messaging porn cam girls + have your main YouTube star post anti-Semitic videos. That doesn't look good for the Disney brand at all.

Was Shay one of the people laid off? I know he did some stuff with 'When the kids go to sleep' - actually I have no idea what he did there.

I agree with you Clank about Makers Studios being shut down. There's no way Disney can afford to support something like that.

It'll end up being a nice big tax write-off for them anyways, so it doesn't hurt Disney at all to close the doors.

If they can afford to give George Lucas 4 billion dollars for the Star Wars franchise (which they almost made back completely after the first movie), they can afford to sweep this 500 million under the carpet and call it the day.

So true! I believe the other Maker Studio founders will be just fine, but Shay might not be. He mentioned a while back that "I'm not as rich as people think I am". He has blown through a lot of money on his home, purchased his childhood ski resort - and owns a failing clothing store. His expenses are high and he needed YouTube to help pay the bills.

With his YouTube career all but over, it's be interesting to see how he moves forward.

It'll be interesting for sure! I wonder how much the ski resort set him back .. that couldn't be cheap. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that go up for sale in the next year or so.

I knew about the clothing line stuff but I had no idea he bought a ski resort. At the end of the day I still feel bad for him. He was/is living a life beyond he means based on a future he thought was certain.

It was posted on this forum, but got buried pretty quickly : Shay Carl buys Ski Resort in Idaho

I couldn't have said it better myself. It's hard to feel badly for him in this case though, as he brought it all upon himself. Also, for him to try and blame alcohol rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Well that's the one thing money can't buy - respect. He lost a ton of that with his fans. Even worse is he lost the trust of his wife. She may learn to forgive him, but she'll never forget - and that's something he's going to have to live with.
